International Conference on Hannah Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem" (Berlin)
On November 4 and 5, the Critical Edition's international conference of Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem" will take place at the Topography of Terror in Berlin. The focus will be on the work as a whole, its contexts, and its new edition.
In the context of the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem in 1961, Hannah Arendt wrote a report that was to become her most controversial book. The conference will examine key themes from Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963) in terms of their historical dimension and current significance, also against the backdrop of the new critical edition of the work. Questions about the possibility of legal punishment for the Holocaust, the topos of the banality of evil, Arendt's perception of Jewish victims and Jewish resistance, and the international debate surrounding the book will be at the center of the discussion.
The conference is sponsored by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the International Office of Freie Universität Berlin, and the Ernst Reuter Society. It is organized with support of the Topography of Terror.
