Research Assistant Job at the Hannah Arendt Edition (Deadline January 5, 2026)

The Hannah Arendt Edition team is looking to hire a research assistant (50% and for up to three years) in the field of digital humanities as soon as possible.

The Critical Edition of the Complete Works of Hannah Arendt (https://hannah-arendt-edition.net / https://www.arendt-research-center.de) has been in the works at Freie Universität Berlin since 2020. Arendt, who is one of the most important political and philosophical intellectuals of the 20th century, published primarily in English and German; the edition is also multilingual. Parallel to the print version of the edition, a digital platform is being created on which Arendt's works and supplementary material will be made accessible in line with current developments in the field of digital editing.
 
Field of Responsibility:
- Development and maintenance of Jupyter Notebooks for exemplary analysis and visualization of the edition data
- Design and implementation of an Open Educational Resource (OER) for teaching data skills in the context of digital editions
- Support for further scientific use by providing, commenting on, and maintaining digital tools
- Collaboration with other areas of the edition, in particular to coordinate API functionality and documentation standards

Employment Requirements:
Completed academic degree (diploma, master's, magister, Staatsexamen) in digital humanities, computer science, library and information science, editorial studies, and/or philology, in the field of philosophy or another humanities subject.
 
Ideal Qualifications:
- Excellent academic degree
- Knowledge of digital humanities, especially working with digital editions and semantically annotated data
- Experience with Python and Jupyter Notebooks, ideally also with Jupyter Book or comparable publication formats
- Basic knowledge of API development and documentation (e.g., REST, JSON, OpenAPI)
- Ability to prepare technical content for teaching purposes, e.g., for tutorials, teaching resources, or workshops
- Good communication and teamwork skills in interdisciplinary research contexts
