Commentary on Presentation of "The Origins of Totalitarianism"

New article by Jette Wiese on introduction of the Critical Edition of "The Origins of Totalitarianism / Elemente und Ursprünge totaler Herrschaft"

News from Jul 07, 2026

In the German newspaper taz, Jette Wiese reports on the presentation of Volume 5 of the Critical Edition, The Origins of Totalitarianism / Elemente und Ursprünge totaler Herrschaft, on June 23 in the Senate Hall at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The author discusses the current interest in Arendt’s writings on totalitarianism, the work complex The Origins of Totalitarianism / Elemente und Ursprünge totaler Herrschaft in its bilingual form – published in both German and English – and the text as the product of continuous revisions in a "20-year process of thinking." Even though Arendt's work “does not provide the single cause" of totalitarianism, but rather explores “various origins,” the 3,000-page new volume of the Critical Edition makes it possible to “accompany Hannah Arendt a little way along the path of her thinking,” according to Wiese. (Translation from German.)
